ESG Glass Case Studies

Almost 100 glass panels from independent glass processor ESG have been installed by specialist glazed system expert Alco Beldan at the new Evolution housing site in the London Borough of Barnet. The toughened laminated panels, laminated with a diffused white interlayer for both privacy and a pleasing aesthetic, form a long run of Wintergardens surrounding luxury apartments on the sixth and seventh floor of an apartment building in the new development.

Alco Beldan commissioned ESG to produce 96 independent panels of 17.5mm toughened laminated glass from its Tufflam range, in order to glaze 316 linear metres of GM Toproll 15/24 which make up the perimeter of the two floors. The Wintergardens were all installed within a six week period, ESG working closely with Alco Beldan to ensure that panels were delivered on site just as they were needed. With the Wintergardens completed, the luxury apartments were handed over to be marketed by the developer, Barratt Homes.

Evolution is the name given to the ambitious regeneration scheme to redevelop the Stonegrove and Spur Road Estates, to provide more than 900 homes in a new sustainable neighbourhood in Barnet. In a partnership between the London Borough of Barnet, Family Mosaic Housing Association and Barratt Homes, Evolution is a mix of private and social housing in the highly sought after Edgware area, which enjoys fast connections to the centre of London.

The development was planned to be as sustainable and as aesthetically pleasing as possible, including improvements to landscaping and infrastructure. The original estates were built between the 1950s and the 1970s, and were not considered cost effective to update. Instead a complete redevelopment was undertaken to produce a completely revitalised neighbourhood.

Large quantities of ESG glass were also used in conjunction with Alco Beldan in another recent London redevelopment at Wembley City. ESG is one of the UK’s most versatile independent glass processors, developing market leading toughened laminated glass; fire resistant safety glass; high security glass to deter vandals and intruders; and a new Visionary designer glass range; as well as providing a comprehensive portfolio of other glass products and specialist processes.

We joined forces with Alloy Fabweld recently on a contemporary project to create a Donald Judd coloured glass wall design, throughout a newly built block of luxury flats in Warton Road, Stratford. The end result is an innovative piece of art which is also a stunning visual centrepiece in the heart of Stratford.

Warton Road contemporary coloured glass wall designAlloy Fabweld commissioned ESG to create vibrant back-painted glass panels to complete the modern project. The panels were placed vertically, horizontally and overhead in Alloy Fabweld’s specially designed and constructed stainless steel framework, on the interior and exterior concierge areas of the block of flats. Each glass panel has been attached with steel fixings, trimmed neatly with a stainless steel skirting. The wall abutting was then clad in mirror panels of similar dimension to the glass, to create an extremely bright and spectacular appearance.

Susan Sinden, Commercial Manager of ESG said, “As the appearance of buildings continues to evolve, we feel that it is important that we continue to develop and provide glass products that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The Warton Road flat design is a perfect example as it’s not only practical in its design, but its uniqueness creates a real talking point.”

Alloy Fabweld, an architectural and secondary steelwork company, specified the project for Telford Homes and provided the support steelwork for the design. David Keates, Project Co-ordinator at Alloy Fabweld, stated, “The project required a complex steel structure to support ESG’s glass panels.  It had to be solid enough to support the glass but also delicate enough to allow fine adjustment of the fixing locations, to ensure that all the shadow gaps between the glass panels were equal and level.” He continued, “We wanted to create an extremely bright and colourful concierge area, with minimal framing to the external glazing. With the help of ESG’s back-painted glass, we were able to make this design a reality and completed our original aim of bringing the outside in.”

The ESG Designer Range of laminated glass allows clients to create bespoke designs, incorporating a vast array of colours, patterns and materials.
